What You Learn In Private Investigation School

Many times, retired policemen take on the job of a private investigator and use their training as an officer of the law as qualification. Other times, someone might want to go to school specifically to be a private investigator. While such schools vary in their scope, there are a few general skills which all private investigators need and must either be learned on the job or while in school.

Criminology

Criminology is simply the study of crime. If you wish to be a private investigator then you need to understand the nature of crime. In order for you to be able to solve a case, you have to be able to understand the facts of a case and the thoughts of the criminal mind.

A quality private investigation school will equip its students with the tools they need to solve cases. These tools would include forensics and psychology because PI work deals not only with evidence but also with human nature.

Forensics

This is a very general term which refers to the application of science to law. If is often used when referring to scientific analysis of evidence when working to solve a crime. The PI needs to be able to sift through clues and analyze evidence in order to solve a mystery and close the case.

Psychology

Private investigators work very closely with other people when trying to solve a case. They will conduct interviews and talk with officials. They need to understand human nature and be able to ready body language so they can judge when someone is lying. Psychology is also useful when profiling a criminal. If an investigator can figure out how a criminal thinks, he has a better chance of catching him.

Self Defense

Since a PI works with criminal cases and around criminals, it is wise to learn self defense in case he is ever in a life threatening situation. Investigators also tend to make a lot of enemies because they are seen as meddlers. There are two types of self defense being taught today. One of these is armed self defense. Private investigators are usually allowed to carry firearms for self defense. Therefore the private investigation school will teach the proper use of firearms in order to promote safe use. One mistake can cost a life so one must understand how to handle and use firearms properly. The second type of self defense that is taught is unarmed self defense. In case the private investigator does not have a gun, he still needs to be able to defend himself. Most likely a form of martial arts will be taught.
